The Rise of Dubious Business Consultants

For a few years now, these “business consultants” have been popping up like mushrooms. They mostly target sole proprietors or small businesses. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some specialize more in legal and bureaucratic advice, others focus on the mindset aspect of the story, while others take on more of the technical or marketing aspect… but anyway, almost all of them are charlatans.

I’ve dealt with some of them. Either they were my clients or I have sought advice from them myself (got to keep an open mind, right?). But in the end, it always turned out: They’re fishing in murky waters. They themselves have no recipe for a successful business.

Sure, at some point they may have built a successful business themselves and now want to make additional money on the meta-level (how to make a business out of telling others how to do business). But if I look at their careers, they’re super-rare niches, something only they were predestined to do. And the way they succeeded in their niche is not transferable to others.

There are also many consultants among Muslims, and as with many things, they’re just copying these Western philosophical concepts. Actually, these consultant-client relationships are only about paying someone for support, whether with bureaucratic or spiritual support. The level and accuracy of these consulting services are usually atrocious. But the important thing for the client is, that someone is taking on the family role today that used to be mostly taken on by a successful uncle.

Because such an uncle or neighbor, if you had one, gave really good advice before modern times. He really cared, he even introduced his nephew to other businessmen and ensured the necessary networking effect. But lonely Muslims in the diaspora or Western converts don’t have that. So they have to pay for it and maintain the appearance of using a reputable service.
